Review: ibis Budget, Auckland Airport (AKL)

In March 2026, I stayed at the ibis Budget at Auckland Airport, located within the Airport Oaks business park/service area on Leonard Isitt Drive, a 20-minute walk from the airport itself. While the Novotel Auckland Airport is directly connected to the airport, it was charging more than I was willing to pay for a quick overnight. I also thought it’d be worth visiting the budget option around Auckland Airport, given that many might be looking to stay here, particularly before a morning flight to Asia or the U.S..

In terms of the quality of the ibis Budget, the hotel is no-frills, though does the trick – there isn’t much in the way of other great options around the airport. So instead of deciding whether it’s worth it to stay here, I’ll focus on what to expect in this review, including how to get there, what the rooms are like, as well as anything else to be aware of.

Booking the ibis Budget Auckland Airport

My one-night stay at the ibis Budget hotel at Auckland Airport cost £85.03 (HK$888). I booked the hotel by using the Avios shopping portal to access Hotels.com, which allowed me to earn 592 Avios and contributed to my status stay count with Hotels.com (which I was trying out – otherwise I would’ve used Avios Hotels, which has a greater earning rate).

The ibis Budget hotel at Auckland Airport isn’t connected to the airport – it’s a distance away. There’s a yellow bus (called, you guessed it, The Yellow Bus) which operates 24/7. The Yellow Bus operates a dedicated service directly to the ibis and operates approx. every 20 minutes, though it’s not free – it costs NZ$8 (£3.51/HK$37). There’s also a bus that operates a circular route to multiple hotels including the ibis, though I’d avoid that one, as it takes longer. There are some hotels where a proof of reservation will suffice (where the hotel has a contractual agreement with The Yellow Bus to include shuttle service in the reservation), though the ibis isn’t among those hotels.

Figuring I’d want to see as much of New Zealand as possible during my super-short layover, I walked. You’ll have to navigate around a fenced airport car park on the way, though thankfully it’s fairly easy to get out, as long as you follow the signs to get out the same way the cars do. However, if you’re not confident navigating your way around, I’d recommend taking the Yellow Bus.

The ibis Budget is a decent size with 198 rooms, and fairly easily recognisable, with a branded exterior.

If you want to venture out into the city, there’s a bus stop nearby. However, expect this bus out into the city to take about an hour.

ibis Budget Auckland Airport Lobby and Public Spaces

Once I stepped into the ibis Budget lobby, I was checked in by a friendly associate. The lobby has slight “high school cafeteria” vibes, though the range of seating is good if you want to perch and work here.

However, it’s worth noting that the coffee and tea station in the lobby is free. I don’t know how long of a line this ever gets – I left quite early in the morning, though I imagine there could be a bit of a wait if the hotel is busy.

Although I booked a twin room (as it was cheaper), I was assigned a queen bed room, presumably as they saw I was travelling solo (it was also around 1 AM). So I received my key card and headed upstairs, where I found a modern-looking hallway.

ibis Budget Auckland Airport Standard Room

As I mentioned, I received a room with a queen bed. This room looked more modern than what I’d seen on the hotel website, so I imagine it must’ve been refreshed in recent history. Rooms are advertised at around 129 sq. ft (around 12 sq. m), and that seemed about right.

Apart from a comfortable king bed (more so than I’d have expected from a budget hotel), there was a bench by the window, and a tea and coffee station. I appreciated that there were complimentary biscuits on top of the tea and coffee. That was it, though, in terms of seating – if you wanted a proper desk setup you’d have to head downstairs.

Since we were a distance from the airport (and the city…) and facing the wrong direction, there wasn’t much in the way of views.

Speaking of, I managed to check out the view from one of the hallway windows in the morning. It’s not much better (unless you really like cars or carparks), though you can see the tarmac far away in the distance.

The bathroom was tiny, though well-equipped enough. There was a toilet and sink, as well as a walk-in shower cubicle, which featured good water pressure.

While the room was nothing special, I found it to be modern, with good ventilation. The bed was also really comfortable, and I enjoyed the room for my short overnight, especially given how much cheaper the room was compared to neighbouring options.

The only gripe I have – and this could potentially be quite major depending on the duration of your stay – is that WiFi really wasn’t great. It felt slow, and measured 4.61 Mbps down and 4.75 Mbps up – that’s slower than my free WiFi on my (non-Starlink) Air New Zealand flight the next day.

ibis Budget Auckland Airport Facilities

There aren’t a ton of other facilities offered by the hotel – for example, there definitely isn’t an onsite gym available, nor is there a spa. However, there is free coffee and tea available in the lobby, which is marginally better than the powdered solution you’ll get in-room. A breakfast buffet is available for NZ$23 (£10.10/HK$105).

In terms of other facilities, there are also vending machines available by the lift lobby.

Conclusion: ibis Budget Auckland Airport

The ibis Budget Auckland Airport is the only budget hotel in close proximity to Auckland Airport, outside of the Novotel or Pullman’s price point. I was quite surprised by how fresh the rooms felt (especially compared to PR photos), and also appreciated features such as free coffee in the lobby. However, in a way you get what you pay for, since there wasn’t much more to the hotel than that, and I wasn’t a fan of the WiFi situation. If I had some time I’d choose to walk to the hotel, especially if the weather is good – it’s a good opportunity to get some fresh air, and the hotel isn’t far from the airport.

As someone who arrived at 1 AM and had a commitment at the airport in the early morning, this hotel was perfect for me. However, if you’ve got a bit more time, I’d say that some of the hotels serviced by the Yellow Bus are nicer at a similar price point, and also provide more of an opportunity to venture into the city centre (since they’re closer).
