Upon deplaning my flight from Geneva I headed towards the signage for the Z gates, where I knew my flight would be departing from. Along the way, I saw signage for a Concourse A Lufthansa lounge, so I thought it wouldn’t hurt if I paid it a visit.
It was my first time in Frankfurt Airport, so I’m not quite sure how to get to the lounge if you’re departing on an international flight with a business class ticket, but if you’re a Star Gold member departing on a Star Alliance flight or have a Star Alliance business class ticket at hand, you’ll be able to access the lounge. I’m not sure about the regulations if you’re leaving from Frankfurt with a business class ticket, though, as you don’t need to clear security to enter the lounge.
Anyway, I decided to visit the lounge, so gave my boarding pass to the lounge attendant. The lounge attendant stated that there was a “much nicer” lounge by the Z gates, though I still expressed interest in visiting the lounge. She said, “ah, to tour around?” I said “yeah”. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to grab a picture of the lounge entrance.
Near the entrance was some bar seating that was unoccupied throughout my short stay.

The lounge was much nicer than I expected. It was a large room, though there was quite a bit of seating.

The lounge seemed pretty crowded at the time, though there were still some empty seats. I liked the decor of the lounge – it’s not my absolute favourite, though it’s bright, airy and features lots of light, and I reckon there would be enough natural light during the day.

Most of the seating consisted of comfortable armchairs that were grey and brown.

Apart from the armchairs, there was also some bar seating, though I’m not sure why you would want to be seated there unless you had a particular reason to.

There were multiple different seating areas scattered around the lounge.

Some included communal tables – it’s always nice to have the option, especially if you’re traveling with a large group of people or meeting up with business partners before a flight.

While the middle of the lounge was crowded, some of the nooks were empty, and would have been great places to hang out in.

I noticed a nap room at the end of one of the hallways sprouting from the middle of the lounge.

The nap rooms looked decent, with daybeds and fancy lighting. I wouldn’t want to be stuck here for too long, though, as they aren’t real beds, and I suspect the lounge doesn’t provide legitimate bedding.

One thing I appreciate about this lounge was that there was a separate space enclosed off for working, which I would’ve found very useful if I had to work during my time there. Fortunately I didn’t, but I appreciated that they were many stations without computers, so I could just set up station there and work before the flight.

In terms of nooks and crannies there was another big one by the right side of the lounge, that would have been a little quieter though didn’t feature particularly nice seating.

Next to that seating area was a duty free shop that sold luggages – I’m not sure how useful that is before a flight (the headphones would be, but most of the shop consisted of luggages), so it is mostly advertising/style over substance.

There were also some phone booths in the lounge for calling, though I wish there was a door and a seat to make longer Skype calls.

The lounge featured an extensive food spread, which was actually really impressive, considered that this isn’t Lufthansa’s “flagship” lounge. Most notably there was pretzel bread, which was delicious.

There were other types of bread as well, though who needs bread loaves when there are awesome German pretzels?

In terms of the rest of the food spread, there were other options. While most of them were cold, they were pretty high quality, which is more than what I can say about food in quite a few lounges I’ve visited.

There was also beer on tap and quite a selection to choose from, though of course being in Germany I was most interested in the Fanta on tap.

There was also rice pudding, which I had some of before moving on. The rice pudding tasted creamy, sticky and was just great. I love how Lufthansa manages to inject German elements into their food – the details are so small, yet they leave such a great impression.

There was a coffee machine, which was fine, as the coffee it produced was decent.

I knew that the lounge had shower rooms. I was looking to shower after immigration so I could get that sorted with, as I was expecting it to be quite a disaster. However, I still wanted to take pictures, so asked the shower attendant, who gladly agreed.
The shower room was really large, and in my opinion, nicely decorated. No, it wasn’t stunning, though it was big and clean, which is all I’m really looking for while showering.

I’ll assume that the water pressure was as excellent here as it was at the Z lounge, though I can’t speak for it, since I didn’t take a shower. The entire setup was nice, though – I would have appreciated a door between the shower compartment and the rest of the room, but it was big and well-ventilated enough.

If I had one complaint, it’s that the shampoo and body wash came out of the same container. I always like when toiletries are branded, so you know that they’re of a specific quality. It also worries me that the shampoo and body wash are mixed, though at least the dispenser worked, so I’m not necessarily complaining.

WiFi in the lounge was fast and free, though was a bit of a pain to connect to – while my computer stayed connected, my phone kept disconnecting every time it was locked.
I wanted to leave the lounge early in case immigration was as much as a pigsty as I was imagining it to be. While I left, I said to the lounge attendant that for a Schengen lounge, it was much better than I was expecting.
She replied “just wait until you get to the Z lounge, it’s even nicer”.
Bottom Line
For a non-flagship lounge in Frankfurt, I was really impressed by the lounge. There was an extensive range of seating, the shower seemed impressive, and the decor of the lounge was great. The WiFi in the lounge was great, and the food wasn’t only good, but was also markedly German. To me, that hits quite a few of the things I look for in an airline lounge.
I don’t think there’s anything actively fun to do in the lounge, though, so I wouldn’t come early to visit. However, it’s a more-than-solid lounge option at Frankfurt Airport.
