Cathay Pacific’s New Economy Service Structure

Hello from Kuala Lumpur (normally I use the local language, but “hello” is how they say it here)! I’ve just got off Cathay Pacific’s A330 in economy, which was a nice flight in my all-time favourite economy seat, if nothing more.

One thing that makes this flight so special is that this flight was run on Cathay Pacific’s new service since their rebranding. While I’m gonna try their new business class service next March, I’m seeing some changes in general and in their economy product. So what did I see different on this flight?

NEW ATTENDANT UNIFORMS

The flight attendant uniforms have been slightly modified to fit the new design, presumably to match the more “at home” feel Cathay Pacific is trying to create. I didn’t get any pictures of that, mostly because I didn’t feel like taking a picture of the flight attendants.

NEW WELCOME DRINKS

Cathay Pacific has new welcome drinks now, consisting of orange and guava juice, admittedly not in glasses. That’s a business class touch, so it’s nice to see that happening.

NEW CUPS

Speaking of welcome drinks, Cathay Pacific’s old cups were really easy to break – while it hadn’t happened to me before, presumably squeezing out a crack in the cup would result in all the contents inside spilling out.

Cathay Pacific’s new cups aren’t only elastic and much harder to break – but most importantly, they’re much bigger, which means that you get more than five minutes’ worth of hydration every time.

NEW SAFETY VIDEO

Cathay Pacific’s old safety video was painfully outdated.

The new safety video, while still not particularly humorous or interesting, is definitely better designed, with much better graphics. It’s kind of more fun than just watching people move around the screen.

BOTTOM LINE

I’m impressed with the updates, and can’t wait to be flying Cathay Pacific more. While they still don’t weigh up to, say, Thai Airways’ soft product, I’d say their refresh is substantial for getting more people to fly them.
