Review: The Beas River Chalet (Hong Kong)

My parents had planned to go on a little getaway during Christmas to The Beas River Chalet Hong Kong. While it definitely wasn’t the first time I’ve stayed (you can check out my previous reviews here and here), I was excited to revisit the property, as I do like it quite a bit. With a new camera and a sizeable year and a half since my last stay, I did think it was due for a revisit on the blog. The chalet retails at around HK$600-HK$1000, and it was about HK$800 for us as we were members of the Beas River Country Club and staying during peak season.

We pulled into the chalet at around 1 PM, and checked in at The Levade, which is the clubhouse’s shop and chalet lobby. The person at the counter gladly checked us in, which was a quick process.

We then exited the LEVADE and headed towards the rooms. While we could’ve gone through the back door, my dad had a car to drive over, so we exited through the main doors, where there was an entryway as well as parking space.

It was a short sub-five minute walk over to the chalet grounds. While I’ve visited before, I do think it’s worth pointing out how stunning the chalet looks. It’s essentially what you’d find in a laid-back country club in America, except it’s streamlined to feel like it’s in Hong Kong at the same time. It manages to feel sterile, upmarket and laid-back all in the same process.

We were assigned rooms 27 and 28, which were on the first floor. We found our rooms swiftly and used our key cards to get in.

The room featured a very sterile entryway, which led straight into the room and right into the bathrooms.

The room itself featured warm tones. I know it looks sterile in the below picture, but it does have bright colours. It featured two comfortable beds, a chaise longue, a desk and chair, and a flatscreen TV.

Behind the beds were pictures of the clubhouse/chalet in its history, which I appreciate.

The chaise longue was comfortable, though not as comfortable as the ones they provide in rooms with double beds.

One thing I particularly love about these rooms is that the desk and chair faces away from the room. This way, no matter what I’m doing, at least I have a little privacy (not that anything I’m doing requires privacy, but I’m not usually comfortable with everyone being able to look at my screen at least I’m watching a movie with someone).

I also loved that the room now featured USB charging, which I don’t think was a common feature back in July 2015 (it certainly wasn’t, since we got the same rooms).

There were also standard power ports – no universal power ports, unfortunately, but for us Hong Kong-ers it wasn’t a big concern.

The bathrooms at The Beas River Chalet have always had my heart, since they feature a lot of space. They’re also really nicely decorated, and both the enclosed shower and toilet are pretty big in size.

There’s a luggage rack, which I actually appreciate, as it can make the room feel cluttered sometimes. The door to the bathroom is also huge, which makes this setup an easy one.

The shower room itself is massive, and the water pressure is consistently great.

The bathroom featured Muguet D’Ogive amenities, which I hadn’t heard of prior to staying here for the first time. They’re decent, though not great.

In terms of the views, there isn’t much to see, not that you’d expect to have any views when staying one storey above ground.

By the side of the room was a bottle of wine, complimentary water as well as complimentary fruit.

I had a look at the minibar, which was well-stocked. Unfortunately, items in a minibar normally come with astronomical prices, and these drinks were no exception.

Overall I thought the room was very nicely appointed, as I had previously expressed. I’m a fan of the light, professional tones in the room, and the wood finishes that provide an almost equestrian feel. While there were quite a few complimentary amenities, we never touched anything other than the water (apples lying around…ew), though I do appreciate that there’s the option.

The chalet features an adjacent food court, which was serving up a few specialty dishes. I had the lobster ramen for dinner and a fried sea bass for breakfast. The lobster ramen was fine, and I liked the lobster (the soup that came with it was a little salty, though).

The fried sea bass was nothing like I was expecting, but still tasted fine, I guess. I wonder what I was doing ordering fried sea bass at the Chinese counter.

In terms of amenities, there’s a great bicycle trail and a few courts where you can play tennis, badminton, etc., so think of this as a recreational center.

Bottom Line

The Beas River Chalet is a great getaway option that I’d suggest for anyone living in Hong Kong or anyone that’s staying in Hong Kong for more than a couple of weeks. It’s a nice change of pace, and the decor in the hotel is great. That said, it is rather removed, and there’s not much to do in the vicinity, so I wouldn’t recommend staying here for more than a night.

Still, I love this place and would return in a heartbeat.
